Parks and play areas

Surrey Heath Borough Council manages numerous parks and open spaces, and its parks and play areas page names Frimley Lodge Park, Lightwater Country Park, Heatherside Recreation Ground, Camberley Park, Chobham Recreation Ground and London Road Recreation Ground. The council says parks are maintained by an external company, Glendale, and it has a page for reporting overflowing bins or maintenance problems. It also has a water safety page, worth reading before a visit to any pond or water.

Frimley Lodge Park

Frimley Lodge Park is a 24-hectare park. Per the council's Frimley Lodge Park page it has:

  • two playgrounds, one behind the cafe and one near the miniature railway; the main playground is for children up to 14 and includes castle-themed towers, zipwires, swings and inclusive equipment such as a wheelchair swing and a sensory eco-rain wheel;
  • a miniature railway, open on the first Sunday of each month;
  • a cafe serving drinks and snacks;
  • a trim trail in the meadow area near car park three;
  • a free lending library with books for all ages;
  • football pitches, a 3G pitch and a cricket pitch that can be hired, plus BBQ and function room hire.

The page does not give opening times or an address, so check the key information link on it before you go.

Lightwater Country Park

The council describes Lightwater Country Park as 59 hectares of mostly heathland, with ponds, woodland and meadows. Its page lists a cafe open seven days a week, 9:30am to 4:30pm, a playground with multi-play units, climbing frame, activity net, swings and an agility trail, an 18-hole adventure golf course, fishing with day tickets, and self-guided walking routes. Lightwater Leisure Centre is in the park, run by Lifestyle Fitness according to the council's leisure centres page. Check the page for dog rules and parking details, as it does not state them.

Places Leisure Camberley

Places Leisure Camberley is on Grand Avenue, Camberley GU15 3QH. Its centre page lists a splashpad, soft play, Clip 'n Climb, pools, a sports hall and Costa Coffee, plus Swim Happy lessons, gymnastics and climbing instruction and a multisport youth club called the Friday Night Project. Published opening hours are Monday to Friday 6:00am to 10:00pm and Saturday and Sunday 7:00am to 8:00pm. Activities and times for children change by session, so check the centre's timetable before turning up.

Surrey Heath Museum

It has displays on local history including recreations of a 1970s office, a WWI kitchen and WWII air raid shelter, and runs children's workshops through its education service. Some talks and walks carry a small charge, as listed on the site.

The canal and the library

The Basingstoke Canal, which runs through the area, promotes walking, cycling, paddleboarding and boat trips on its website. It mentions a visitor centre with the postcode GU16 6DD, so check opening hours and facilities before travelling. Libraries also run children's activities; see our libraries guide and ask at the branch.
